The Great War was a global war fought between the major powers of Europe and North America from 1914 to 1917. The war began with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists in Sarajevo. The bombing led Austria-Hungary to declare war against Serbia, invoking military alliances across the globe and beginning the largest war in human history.
