Following her retirement, Caronia spent a year in Southampton. She was eventually bought by Universal Lines. Her name was changed to SS Columbia with registry in Panama. She sailed for Greece for a much needed engine refit. While there, her name was changed one more time to SS Caribia. On her very first cruise, Caribia suffered an engine room explosion near Martinique. The stricken ship had to be towed to back to New York, never to undertake a commercial voyage again. Caribia was eventually sold for scrap in 1974.
But that was not the end of her story...
