I am working on two battleships based on these two proposals, and yes they were real proposals.

Battleship "Possible"
http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/imag ... 84018c.htm
and
Battleship Cruiser Scheme D
http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/imag ... 84137c.htm

Of course I´ll add a more standard superstructure to both of them, especially the Possible.

Begging your pardon sir, I read armour protection instead of gun size on that plan!

But still...

After seeing the Hachi-Hachi never-were fleet I felt that America needed some ships to counter those. The first one is the Louisiana class battleship. It has the same 12x16 inch guns as the South Dakota and the same armor, but on a 281 meter long and 32 meter wide hull for high speed. Though she does not present an increase in arnament or armor her top speed of 27 knots brings her up to any new Japanese battleship such as the Nagato and Tosa classes. Her displacement would be around 55,000-57,000 tons standard. I took the hull from the unfinished Battleship Cruiser drawing I have. There will be more to come.

that is one huge hull for quite little arnament.....
I would think an 27 knots ship would have larger propellers, and I can't help but think that the actual machinery length is not that much (fitting the turbines between the aft funnel and the turret)
the distance from the forward funnel to the bridge seems to give quite an empty space (forward funnel to the turret could be filled with boilers, and the funnel trunked to that position, but that would prove quite complex.)

The hull is actually based on a real design so it`s not unnatural.

USS montana was to be as long as this one (and actually 5 meters more beamier) and had the same armament, so i too think that she is not under-armed.
