I'm not sure why you think that. The A-17's/A-33's contemporaries (including the Stuka) lacked the performance to be viable combat aircraft, something that can't be said of fighters configured for the same mission. Besides, the USAAF already fielded a plane that was based on an improved design of the A-17/A-33 - the A-24 Banshee, based on the SBD Dauntless (itself based on the aforementioned aircraft).
