Are you really sure about the ring on the type B 40mm mounts? They're stated as being bolt on mounts with no interference below decks yet here that is not the case.

From all the literature I've read and/or possess it's stated that there is a zero penetration mountnot a minimal penetration mount in the family yet in my 1973/74 edition of Jane's Weapon Systems it gives a similar deck penetration figure for the 440rd magazine variant of .94m. That said the 440 rounds are stowed above deck so I can't see what the racks are actually there for on the type B. It makes no sense what so ever.

The specifications that Jane's WS give me are:

Calibre: 40mm
Barrel Length: 70 calibres
Max. Recoil: 250mm
Elevation: -13 to +85
Traverse: Unlimited
Elevation rate: 90deg/sec
Traverse rate: 86deg/sec
Elevation acceleration: 120/sec^2
Traverse acceleration: 120/sec^2
MV: 1000m/sec
Range: Max: 12.5km Max. Alt: 8.5km
Rate of Fire: 300rpm per barrel
Read rounds: 440 or 736

Weights:
Unloaded mounting (440rd) Above deck 5.0t below 4.7t (736rd) Above deck 5.5t, below deck 5.0t
Loaded mounting with 440rds above deck 6.1t below deck 5.8t with 736rds 7.3t above deck and 6.8t below

Heights:
Mounted on deck: 2.30m
With 440rd loader 2.92m
With 736rd loader 3.29m
Loader below deck: .94m for 440rds and 1.32m for 736rds

Swept radius: 3m.

That's straight from the Janes directory.

Heights:
Mounted on deck: 2.30m (Type A/B)
With 440rd loader 2.92m (Type B)
With 736rd loader 3.29m (Type A)
Loader below deck: 0.94m for 440rds (Type B) and 1.32m for 736rds (Type A)

Where in Jane stands there is nothing bellow the deck, for Type B. The different between A and B is magazine size and thus the smaller space needed under deck. but why does it stand loader below deck: 0.94m for 440 rounds (Navweaps says 440 rounds mag.. was the type B) I'am confused :?

(The drawing show there are something bellow deck, on both version)
But then I read Navweaps. And I think what can be the confusion, the magazine are probably stored just under the cannon in the same way as the millenium gun those. No deck penetration the gun stand on it's magazine, that are on the deck. for how in h... shall they manage to get space for 440 rounds in that small gun house!?!

Well on that 3rd image there appear to be well over a hundred rounds inside of the turret itself not just the magazine. As I said I'm confused about the umpteen sources saying no penetration yet the Jane's book says .94m (at least).

[ img ] I'm sure you could fit the 200 odd 35mm rounds into it, especially if you look at the LM test mounting of it on the twin hull vessel, it's bolted straight onto the deck without even it's usual foot...

It'd be nice if we could get some other viewpoints on this whole 40mm conundrum too... I'll concede there does appear to be deck penetration (albeit minimal) but I'd like to find where on earth the no-penetration (either myth or very well hidden) variant is...

I think it has a penetration for it's loader and a small magazine around that loader, while the type A has a bit larger magazine and thus is called a true deck penetration.
