I'll be getting back to serious work on this AU for the forseeable future, but 1942 won't be done for a while yet, so here's a teaser for the year to show that Nyrdanmark is not a dead AU.

"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."


1942 for Nyrdanmark is a very dark time, for the people living then, the tales they will be able to tell their grandchildren of this year are harrowing—if they survive. To live in Nyrdanmark in 1942 is to live in a time of endless suffering and uncertainty: Will you have food tomorrow? Will the Japanese firebombers destroy all that you have left? Will the Nazis come and take you away in the night for being "undesirable"? A constant threat of invasion hangs over everyone, and not just of Japanese invasion, for the Civil War is at its most brutal. Brother kills brother, sister kills sister, the streets run red with the blood of kinsmen. The shadows of Nazism and Communism hang low over a nation already stricken by war and famine, it seems impossible to imagine that Nyrdanmark will persevere.

In the coming year, we will see Nyrdanmark release her full industrial might, we will see uncertainty on all sides. We will see changing strategies for everyone involved in both the World War and the Civil War. No one will remain innocent, for there is blood on everyone's hands. To the few on Discord who know my plans, you know what I mean. To the folks here, you soon will learn what I have in store for the people of this AU.

The year will see several assassinations, successful and otherwise. The year will see the darkest of times, but the highest peaks of morale as well. It will see both the darkest and the brightest sides of humanity. It will see the largest naval battles since the Great War, it will see great campaigns on the land. Will it see Nyrdanmark turn the tide? That remains uncertain.

What is certain, though, is that Nyrdanmark may be down, but she is not out.

And now, to close out this little teaser, the final speech from The Great Dictator, which I thought was very fitting.

"I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.…..

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!"

Following the same pattern as the previous F-1920 class, the F-1928 class of torpedo boat leaders was largely identical. They carried the same armament of 4x88mm guns and 6x533mm torpedoes. The straight bow was ditched in favor of a faster raked bow, they were fitted with more modern hydrophones, a windshield was added to the flying bridge, and her suite of radio equipment was almost doubled. They reached a trial speed of 35 knots, though normally operated at around 14.

Being the second most modern class of torpedo boat leader on the outbreak of the war, they were involved in much of the opening action. They were well liked, unlike their predecessors, and were critical in keeping Nyrdanmark's shores safe from Japanese submarine raids.

F-1930-class Destroyers

The F-1930 class signaled a major paradigm shift in KNF destroyer design, mostly brought on by their analysis of Japan's recently commissioned Fubuki-class destroyers. The pattern set by the F-1922 and F-1924 classes was completely done away with, resulting in ships that were bigger, faster, and better armed. They exchanged the inefficient broadside torpedo layout for three triple 533mm launchers along the centerline, and their main armament was 6x127mm in three twin turrets. In another departure from the norm, she carried a single set of reloads for her torpedo tubes, though these facilities would be removed by the time of the Second World War. Their propulsion consisted of four oil-fired boilers feeding a pair of steam turbines with geared drives, for a total shaft horsepower of 50,000 and a trial speed of 38 knots.

On the more political side, the class was to contain 20 hulls instead of the usual 10, due to again, worries over the Fubuki-class destroyers. During the design process for the class, the shipyards at Trellin and Sleið built several new slipways to facilitate the rapid construction of all of the hulls.

The class was a favorite of captain and admiral alike, and set the standard by which all other Nyrdanish destroyers would be measured. During the war they were the oldest destroyers to still be largely effective, being overshadowed by their younger cousins but still serving well.

The F-1932 class was the result of lengthening the F-1930 and adding a superfiring gun mount forward, with most of the design remaining unchanged. The class dropped the torpedo reloads to allow for adding the fourth turret, though her trial speed still dropped to 37.3 knots.

The class was largely unremarkable, overshadowed in both design and wartime service by its younger and older cousins.

F-1934-class Destroyer Leaders

With the LNT in effect, the KNF had to resort to experimental measures to get the large destroyer leaders they wanted, resulting in the F-1934 class. They had a rather futuristic hullform, with an extremely fine hull, having a Cb of only 0.339, and a curious combination of purposely left out structure and a convex bow sheer, all in attempt to reduce the ship's displacement to fit it under the treaty limit of 1,850 tons for destroyer leaders.

It had worked, not only did she have a normal displacement of 1,915 tons, low enough that she could be lightened for trials in order to fit within the treaty, but the experimental hullform was actually stronger than previous destroyer hulls, resulting in a convex bow sheer being adopted for every new class of destroyer until the KNF abandoned the raised forecastle design.

She had an armament of ten 127mm guns in five twin turrets, along with two 533mm torpedo launchers on the centerline, making her one of the hardest hitting destroyers of her time. She reached a trial speed of 36 knots and had a range of 4,000 nm at 14 kts. Being a destroyer leader, she carried the most extensive suite of radio gear of any Nyrdanish destroyer, having much of the same equipment as light cruisers of her time.

Their service during the war would find them mostly operating as regular destroyers, with light cruisers increasingly taking the task of leading destroyer squadrons, though they did still see service in their intended role.

Seiðr - A Sign of Things to Come

The KNF, like most other navies of the time, experimented with various methods of breaking up the outlines of their ships, or obfuscating their speed and direction. By 1941 they had developed two major patterns largely replacing their overall pale grey scheme: "Unnrmyrnstur" and "Brjótamynstur", "Wave pattern" and "Breaking pattern" respectively.

Unnrmyrnstur, or Wave pattern, had the hull painted in a medium blue-grey and the superstructure in a lighter shade of the same color, combined with a false wake. The intention was to both obscure the outline of the ship against the horizon and the water as well as make speed difficult to judge.

Breaking pattern was used primarily by convoy ships, both merchants and escorts, as the pattern was meant to hinder general observation of the ship by making it in general difficult to determine the shape, distance, and heading of the vessel.

Neither pattern proved especially effective, and both ended up being replaced later in the war, though elements of both would be incorporated into later patterns, with most late-war patterns vaguely resembling Unnrmyrnstur.
