O dear reality bites :( .

The problem is I don't have any good references for the hull/structures of the S class so I went for a full rebuild to 'hide' them.

I agree less would probably be done but without good pics I cant really do it accurately.

Thanks to helpful people I now have references so will draw them ;) 8-)

My plan (please feel free to comment)

OTL - S class WW1 1918

AU
- S class as up graded as escort destroyer, 2x4' HA + 3 x 2pdr singles + DCs
- S class as a long range escort 1 x 4' LA + 1 x 2pdr + lots of DCs (losing one funnel/BR) (or should I add a HA gun ? say 2nd 4 inch or 3 inch )
- can you think of any other options ?

Howdy JSB,

If you want to do the real S class as well, I do not think anyone will complain. The only S in the archives is one of the "Anonymous" ones.

The AU versions look fine. For the escort if it is coastal round UK, you could also mount the 2pd bow E-boat gun.

A later 1942 version of those remaining could replace the center 4" position (whatever you have there) with a 40mm single.

Keep up the good work
Nigel

Agreed, some additional real-world examples would be good to see too.
The AU versions look ok to me. Not sure how long-range the long-range escorts would be unless you can cram in enough fuel. I doubt they would match the V&W long-range escorts for example, but they might be good for the Gib run or Med use.

For the Long range escort I suggest you give it a HA 4" gun, or maybe two, some 40 mm Bofors guns (maybe a twin in X position), and lots of DC. These AA oriented guns, along with DCs will make it a better Med escort ship, as the main problem in the Med were aircraft.

My first draft for you as I will not be able to update for a week.

Please point out all the many flaws and my references (thanks Hood/Krakatoa) are not great so any info appreciated.

I have credited Youboat for parts from his M class I used

Nicely done
Two things really
One is the obvious, and shouldn't it be in the Real Life threads?
Two the top view has the forecastle break after the bridge, but from the side view it appears to be in front of the bridge, the sides there being protected by canvas awnings?

Because I like designing more than drawing :( ;)

I need a 4 inch mount, easy you say just use one of the many RN ones, the problem is that they didn't have a 4"/40 (10.2 cm) QF Marks IV in a single HA mount. Nav weps does say that,
Quote:
In 1938 it was proposed to convert 900 Mark IV guns to HA use but this was never carried out.
But I don't think I will find the design so I made my own, from the twin 45 cal Mk XVI

Will this be ok ?

I was going to play with it in this thread and make one later when you guys think its suitable to post in RL (is that ok ? or should I make a new thread now ?)

I think the deck comes back past the bridge but is cut away on the sides (well that how it looks from the pics to me)

Thanks for the help and comments,
JSB

Looking good JSB,

Have a read in Wiki of the description of the bridge placement it gives. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-class_destroyer_(1916)"

You do not want to get too big a shield round the 4" HA conversion, every extra bit of shield you add is more topweight, for which something else has to give. You also need to add a bit more height to the mounting to allow for greater elevation of the gun.

Keep playing with the designs until you are happy that you have got it right. Trial and error (and ColombanMike) normally improve the drawings.

The side view looks good and is close to RL already.

Keep up the good work,
Nigel
