added 40 mm to half of the top view, to try to find a good position for them.

you might be able to use the 40mm without the base ring fitted on the dutch ships. this base ring was used as workspace around the mounting, and to fit ammunition on to (on the outside)
if you fit the 40mm on sponsons and platforms, you might be able to fit the ammunitions on the inside of that ring, and thus have a much smaller platform around the gun then you have now.

updated with a new layout for the 40 mm guns, and added some 20 mm. the drawing is on the first page.

This layout would give me:

36 X 40 mm single
22 X 20 mm single

The platform between the funnel. I see at it as an AA platform mounted over the boats.

any suggestion for improving the layout, more 20 mm's etc. I am also wondering If I should place a 5" twin in-between the lifeboats.

my 5 cents:

AA wise - I'd fit extra 40 and 20mm MMGs near the main guns too. The USS Iowa and the IJN Yamato are two good examples to look at for AA layouts.
5inch wise - Since you've said the triple turrets ahead and aft of the superstructure are 5" too you have 22 barrels, which are 2 more of the Iowas and 2 less of the Yamato. I'd say the amount is acceptable.
