No you are right. i thought about the original layout, she was originally supposed to have only 8 mounts. And Syzmo, Carthage no longer exists.

Obviously he's referring to another AU or just making a joke, as Carthage ceased to exist for longer than almost anything we're familiar with. I doubt it's a result of a failing for history appreciation.

Just curious, does this AU include discovery of America? I not it's not on the enemies list, so not sure if it's present, but allied (not sure how comfortable two such nations would be as allies, but that's a separate discussion) or just hasn't been discovered yet in this AU - or if it's been discovered and is just another Roman colony...

Well, considering the notion that both Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans may actually have touched the Americas...

In fact, there may have been, at least occasionally, Roman fishing fleets off the Newfoundlands!

My concern is though, of what kind of republican system this AU represents, since the classic Roman republic became for all intentions and purposes completely ungovernable due to the lack of proper "imperial" infrastructure, especially with regards to the administration. Hence the emergence of the strong men, such as Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Crassus and Caesar.

My idea is that the empire survived til the 1800s. New ideas of freedom saw a revolution that turned it into a republic, with a more modern form of ruling we see today in America and France. America, yes. I don`t quite know what to do with it as of right now. Rome did have colonies there as well. My idea is that there are no British colonies there, as England is part of Gallia. Scotland and Ireland are free nations. Gallia too, had colonies in America. I might make new nations, like new Native American nations.

Ok, so, what about the Byzantine Empire then? a k a the Greek speaking world? Have you considered that part?
I could possibly help you come up with a plausible AU history, since I'm quite well-read on both the Roman world and its successor states/empires.

Rome did split, but Byzantine was able recover much of the lost territory, as in real life. In this world, one person remembered to lock one of the gates in Constantinople, making sure it never fell. Much of what is today Turkey was reclaimed. As for decour, I am afraid Shipbucket rules forbid me from painting anything related to male and female genitalia, or anything related to their use. I have added a red SPQR flag with an eagle and a leaf laurel around.

In real life Byzantine was an Holy Roman Empire invention, so they could be the successor to Rome. Byzantine was indeed as much Rome as either the empire or the republic.

Hi Karle,

If it's Rome, but a Byznantium Rome, would it still be using the SPQR device? I thought Byzantium used different heraldry, though to be honest, that's quite a minor point for an AU (you may have noticed, I tend to be a "details" guy, both at work and here, it would seem...)

Also, it sounds like the situation with regards to the americas at least could be modelled after the situation around pre-Independence America - Gallia and Rome both trying to block the other out of the fantastic riches promised by the new country. That could make for quite an eventful AU!

Lastly, should I infer from this that Latin will once again be inflicted upon a substantial part of the student population? ;)

Regards,
Adam

It is not really the Byzantine Rome, but more like the old Rome, without some key territories, like France, and most of Roman Africa. It did split, and the western portion disintegrated like real life, but the eastern part retook most of the lost territory. Although I still haven`t figured out what to do with the Americas, a colony race between the Gauls and the Romans seem like the most probable thing. Another rival might be Scandinavia and/or Russia, as both had the capacity to go there. Alaska, for instance is Russian here. Although Latin is the primary language in the republic, many also speak Greek, and/or other languages. In more modern times, the republic becomes more bilingual, both Latin and Greek are the official languages, both are taught in schools. No citizens are forced to speak either languages, because there are too many people to be enforced.

One additional note: the blue scarf that is nowaday used by officiers derives its color from that one used by the roman admirals...
