There are numerous drawings on SB of the 1950's Darings and their spinoffs, so I decided to add one more. At 476x52x22 feet they were bigger than the C and D class cruisers while still being referred to as destroyers. They make a good comparison to the large US and NATO destroyers of the same time period. The ships are likely to have a service run of 25-35 years which will mean they will go through at least 3-4 major refits/rebuilds with lots of updates to electronics and minor weaponry. Having no clue as to what is likely to be available at years, 1970, 1980, 1990, I will be guessing a lot and be very happy to get all the assistance from the "Modern" Masters that they are willing to give. |

Nice work, perhaps a bit heavy with four main mounts and all those radars but I love Super Darings!! You might want to get some updated radars off the RN sheets though... At some point I'll get round to the real Super Darings, but its a project on the back-burners for now. |

I like but would the RN keep steam post 80s ? (but they might well survive in S America to replace CLs) Options that come to mind are a big hangar conversion (losing 2 x twin 4.5) or fitting sea wolf (or other SAM) |

Thanks for the comments guys. The radars are the original on the 'Danae' drawing so will have a look at the sheets to see what can be upgraded. I do not think it would be cost effective to change the ships over from steam post 1980, so if they remain in service they would be stuck with their original propulsion system. Is 1960 a bit early to go for a mixed gas installation? I have in mind to do a couple of upgrade drawings that might take a few tries before I get them right. (lots of help will be required) |

Sorry did not mean that they would be converted but sold or scraped. County class DDGs are ordered with GT/ST mix in 56 and Commissioned in 62 then serving on average less than 16 years till scraped or sold. My main worry is that they would be big and expensive and not add much ? so likely got rid of in a budget cut to save a CV or SAM/helicopter ship. |
