A Little design competition. It is in 1983... the Cold war is colder than ever and USSR is commisioning their Kirovs and Slava and the US recommnonison their Iowa battleships. The Royal Swedish navy have recently decommised its powerful destroyers and are waiting for new Corvettes. The Swedish admirals do have a big secret, Deep inside a archipalago mountai they hide the old coastal battleships HSWMS Drottning Victoria and Gustav V. Now they decide to put forward their idea, an Iowa style modernization program, with adequate airdefence, modern fire Control and sensors, additon of missiles and maybe helicopter capability to mighty 11" guns. How would yoú do it, which weapons and sensors would you ad? other modifactions? |

Oh dear God, why would you even try? They'd be, at best mere distractions to a potential enemy; at worst they'd be horrific floating coffins for their hapless and luckless crews! And, sorry to say, but there can be no 'adequate' anything added to even pretend to upgrade them to present day requirements. A hull and technology dating back to the Great War, simply does not lend itself for that. Mind you, in the end, even the USN decided on the side of austerity when it came to modernize the four Iowas. Their potential was, however, infinitely far superior to our old CDSs! Besides, being an expat-Swede, I know there'd be no political support except from fringes of the far-right looney parties, to implement such an outlandish project! |

What would they be for? The Iowas were recommissioned because the USN was in dire need of command facilities. Something as old as the Gustav V has neither the space, nor the generating capabilities to provide that. And why would the Swedes be interested anyway? They're in the enviable position of being able to put their command facilities in deeply buried bunkers that are immune to just about anything short of a firect nuclear strike. |

the Iowa's were IIRC recomissioned not as command but as tomahawk platforms (if I remember it correct, the command facilities were even kept as untouched as possible so it could not be said that the navy just wanted a nicer flagship) that said, I do not think these ships are as suitable for that as the Iowa's were. |

If by untouched you mean new built in an entirely new section superstructure I suppose you're right That said, both is true. The needed milspec ships with fleet level command facilities and a place to fit a lot of TLAMs. |

Dude, there might not be the space. These CBs arent exactly the most massive ships out there. It'd be a very different task to give one of those the kind of modernization the iowas got. Not to mention power it. The generators probably wont be able to power everything. You may need to rip out a turret to gain space for the generators even. |
