I'd like to thank Colo for letting me hack out his modern Refit of the Alaska class, which I've hacked out here for an RPG (SDNW6):

[ img ]

When from the terrors of Nature a people have fashion’d and worship a Spirit of Evil,
Blest he the Voice of the Teacher who calls to them
‘Set yourselves free!’

Noble the Saxon who hurl’d at his Idol a valorous weapon in olden England!
Great and greater, and greatest of women, island heroine, Kapiolani
Clomb the mountain, and flung the berries, and dared the Goddess, and freed the people
Of Hawa-i-ee!

A people believing that Peelè the Goddess would wallow in fiery riot and revel
On Kilaue-ä,
Dance in a fountain of flame with her devils, or shake with tier thunders and shatter her island,
Rolling her anger
Thro’ blasted valley and flaring forest in blood-red cataracts down to the sea!

Long as the lava-light
Glares from the lava-lake
Dazing the starlight,
Long as the silvery vapour in daylight
Over the mountain
Floats, will the glory of Kapiolani be mingled with either on Hawa-i-ee.

What said her Priesthood?
‘Woe to this island if ever a woman should handle or gather the berries of Peelè!
Accurséd were she!
And woe to this island if ever a woman should climb to the dwelling of Peelè the Goddess!
Accurséd were she!’

One from the Sunrise
Dawn’d on His people, and slowly before him
Vanish’d shadow-like
Gods and Goddesses,
None but the terrible Peelè remaining as Kapiolani ascended her mountain,
Baffled her priesthood,
Broke the Taboo,
Dipt to the crater,
Call’d on the Power adored by the Christian, and crying ‘I dare her, let Peelè avenge herself ’!
Into the flame-billow dash’d the berries, and drove the demon from Hawa-i-ee.
-Alfred Lord Tennyson

Why don't you fit all the secondary gun mounts on the center-line? that way all guns can be used in a broadside on both port and starboard. my suggestion, cut down on the number of mounts and put 1-2 where your VLS cells are, then put banks of VLS on the flanks and amidships where you've got the 5" mounts currently (as long as they have a clear firing arc above them it doesn't matter where on the ship they are right!?!?!)

just a thought...

I'm skeptical of the value of so many RAM. The perils of a fire-and-forget weapon like RAM is that, well, forget about it if it homes on the wrong target. If I wanted to attack such a thing via missilespam, I'd send in a half a dozen big dumb EM-loud active seekers, surrounded by a cloud of something silent like Penguin or NSM. The latter would seem very likely to get through unscathed, and the prospect of getting through a few Phalanx-like mounts doesn't really concern me. In any case, if you're really terrified of missilespam, you really don't have a high enough data rate air search solution, either.

If I were going after a project like this, I'd probably steer clear of RAM entirely. Depending on exactly the era you have in mind, I'd reorient everything around a hit-to-kill system like Iron Dome. Since you're now command-guided, you can probably handle several dozen active tracks with in-the-air interceptors. The ELM-2084 is good for 30rpm; I'd invent a back-to-back mount (effective data rate of 1s) and replace each SPQ-9 with one (you'd presumably be keeping Mk 23, and definitely SPS-49). I see no reason that the 2084 couldn't do surface search and gunfire support, after applying sufficient dollars. As a major, major bonus, Iron Dome could likely take down inbound heavy artillery shells.

Meanwhile, I'd personally ditch the beam Mk 45 mounts. I'm sort of skeptical of the location of the VLS amidships; I'd replace the beam Mk 45 with VLS on each side, which will surely have less trouble in practice. Midships might be a great place to put more ABLs, although I do wonder if a freestanding Mk 41 block in the Mk 45 positions might be a better investment. It's very easy to imagine a 32-cell block on either beam, thus freeing up space for better boat handling and whatnot. Your Sea Sparrow would also live here.

Actually, you've removed weight from both forward and aft midships 5/38 mounts. I might move the VLS block (again, fully above the weather deck) to where the RHIB is now, and move the RHIB aft. This might be better for weight and balance purposes. I'd replace the forward freestanding RAM mount with a pile of Iron Dome VLS; 32 cells on each side would probably be trivial. More freestanding Iron Dome VLS boxes would likely sit near the stern.

OK Timothy,
Fun project.

I'm just trying to figure out how the heck Hawai'i's going to pay for all that pretty hardware! Add in the rest of the Pacific Islands there's just not enough acreage available to grow any cash cow crops (pocololo, coffee, etc.) Pineapple, cane, and macadamia nuts went to the 3rd world ages ago. Tourists can't bring the kind of money needed...unless maybe if you turned the islands into a combo gambling, surfing, wahini watching, Thailand destination hoochie meca. Pele' would swoon...well maybe not.

If you've annexed the Philippines there's a ready slave population with resident overlords and OK manufacturing capability to flood cheap but profitable merchandise to retailers worldwide. You can almost compete against China...almost. You can also exercise your Fleet to subdue the southern islands and knock them into line (or simply expend short shelf life ordinance on all the villages and gorilla camps for kicks...oops! Training).

Very reasonable question Craig. The fact is that in this game Honolulu is one of the two largest trade cities in the world (The freakish city of San Dorado is the only larger). As well, most of the hardware comes from the much larger neighbors who wish to see the Unified Kingdoms stand up as a poison shimp against aggressors (and with two of the four largest economies in this world doing so, I've got a lot of access to some very nice kit at low prices).

Doo also keep in mind that while the quality of the kit is high the quantity of the kit is rather low (not more than 9 destroyers, 5 auxiliaries, 6 subs, ext). Now, if I was being more realistic I'd see these numbers drop somewhat (I am using a game mechanic for what I can support) but only slightly.
