Post subject: | Battleship Romulus |
If the title is not self-explanatory enough, this is a Roman battleship. The premise is that Rome never fell, and exists today, as a republic. Facing several major, and many minor powers throughout the world, Rome must build four new battleships, with an option for a fifth. The new class is to be named after Romulus, one of the founders of Rome. Joining her are the sister ships Remus, Jupiter and Roma. The ships are armed with 4x3 15 inch guns, 10x3 5 inch DP guns, 14 twin 30 mm autocannons and 8 triple 45mm autocannons. The ships are built for a max speed of 30 kts. The ships are 269,75 meters long, and 35 meters wide. The draft at normal displacement is 10,67 meters. The ships are built not only for the Mare Nostrum, but also for the Atlantic and from posessions in Asia. Romulus herself is commisoned in 1939, with her four sisterships joining her within 1,5 years. Together, they would form the core of the new battleline with new cruisers and destroyers with only one mission; to dominate all of the worlds oceans. Romulus, Roman Republic Battleship laid down 1937 Displacement: 56 107 t light; 58 914 t standard; 60 452 t normal; 61 683 t full load Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught 885,00 ft / 856,50 ft x 121,39 ft (Bulges 121,39 ft) x 37,00 ft (normal load) 269,75 m / 261,06 m x 37,00 m (Bulges 37,00 m) x 11,28 m Armament: 12 - 16,00" / 406 mm guns (4x3 guns), 2 048,00lbs / 928,96kg shells, 1937 Model Breech loading guns in turrets (on barbettes) on centreline ends, evenly spread, 2 raised mounts - superfiring 20 - 5,00" / 127 mm guns (10x2 guns), 62,50lbs / 28,35kg shells, 1937 Model Dual purpose guns in turrets (on barbettes) on side, all amidships, 6 raised mounts - superfiring 16 - 1,57" / 40,0 mm guns (8x2 guns), 1,95lbs / 0,88kg shells, 1937 Model Anti-aircraft guns in deck mounts on side, evenly spread 28 - 0,79" / 20,0 mm guns in single mounts, 0,24lbs / 0,11kg shells, 1937 Model Anti-aircraft guns in deck mounts on side, evenly spread Weight of broadside 25 864 lbs / 11 732 kg Shells per gun, main battery: 110 Armour: - Belts: Width (max) Length (avg) Height (avg) Main: 12,0" / 305 mm 546,00 ft / 166,42 m 18,00 ft / 5,49 m Ends: Unarmoured Main Belt covers 98 % of normal length - Torpedo Bulkhead and Bulges: 5,00" / 127 mm 546,00 ft / 166,42 m 10,00 ft / 3,05 m - Gun armour: Face (max) Other gunhouse (avg) Barbette/hoist (max) Main: 18,0" / 457 mm 8,00" / 203 mm 16,0" / 406 mm 2nd: 2,00" / 51 mm 1,00" / 25 mm 1,00" / 25 mm - Armour deck: 7,00" / 178 mm, Conning tower: 18,00" / 457 mm Machinery: Oil fired boilers, steam turbines plus diesel motors, Geared drive, 4 shafts, 183 806 shp / 137 120 Kw = 30,00 kts Range 6 000nm at 12,00 kts Bunker at max displacement = 2 769 tons Complement: 1 926 - 2 505 Cost: £29,415 million / $117,659 million Distribution of weights at normal displacement: Armament: 3 233 tons, 5,3 % Armour: 22 357 tons, 37,0 % - Belts: 5 111 tons, 8,5 % - Torpedo bulkhead: 1 010 tons, 1,7 % - Armament: 6 242 tons, 10,3 % - Armour Deck: 9 397 tons, 15,5 % - Conning Tower: 597 tons, 1,0 % Machinery: 5 094 tons, 8,4 % Hull, fittings & equipment: 25 323 tons, 41,9 % Fuel, ammunition & stores: 4 345 tons, 7,2 % Miscellaneous weights: 100 tons, 0,2 % Overall survivability and seakeeping ability: Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship): 89 622 lbs / 40 652 Kg = 43,8 x 16,0 " / 406 mm shells or 13,0 torpedoes Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1,01 Metacentric height 6,8 ft / 2,1 m Roll period: 19,5 seconds Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 68 % - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0,90 Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1,37 Hull form characteristics: Hull has raised forecastle Block coefficient: 0,550 Length to Beam Ratio: 7,06 : 1 'Natural speed' for length: 29,27 kts Power going to wave formation at top speed: 50 % Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50 Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 37,98 degrees Stern overhang: -6,50 ft / -1,98 m Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length): - Stem: 36,50 ft / 11,13 m - Forecastle (20 %): 26,00 ft / 7,92 m (25,50 ft / 7,77 m aft of break) - Mid (50 %): 34,50 ft / 10,52 m - Quarterdeck (15 %): 25,50 ft / 7,77 m - Stern: 27,00 ft / 8,23 m - Average freeboard: 29,48 ft / 8,98 m Ship space, strength and comments: Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 81,9 % - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 215,3 % Waterplane Area: 72 561 Square feet or 6 741 Square metres Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 103 % Structure weight / hull surface area: 242 lbs/sq ft or 1 183 Kg/sq metre Hull strength (Relative): - Cross-sectional: 0,94 - Longitudinal: 1,61 - Overall: 1,00 Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is excellent Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily |

That's a nice looking BB Karle! Do you have any basic specs or an SS report? |

Don't you think its a little bit way too much American looking; read: Iowa! I like the AU- notion, and I can even envisage contributing to a credible story line, but Karle, why not making it more Italian-style? After all, the Littorios were magnificent looking ships! Also the camo is too American for my taste, unfortunately. On a side note, and thus would be only at your discretion, but, considering the civic pride with which Roman citizens embraced their republic, before it was corrupted and then destroyed by various warlords, I'd add the Fasces symbol or maybe the SPQR on the fantail. |

Yeah, the roman culture was way into visual symbols and pageantry so some decorative flavor might be appropriate. Granted a modern Roman nation would look very different from its ancient self but still. |

Very nice ship. (btw. You're sure about anchors being painted partially in one color and partially in the other? ) |

The reason for me not using the Littorio class as my main inspiration is that it would be too obvious. Italy should not be compared to Rome. Besides, only the aft superstructure, the fore funnel and the front tower, and the secondary arnament layout is inspired by the Iowa. The paint scheme I chose because it looks nice, the upper dark almost black color is inspired by French ships. The color she has now is bacause she is operating in home waters, she was transferred to the Atlantic and recieved a dark gray color. I should probably mention some of the enemies of Rome; the main antagonist is of course Gallia, or France. Germania, Russia, the Arabic empire, Persia, China and Japan are some of the main enemies, and sometimes, hateful allies. |

how can gallia be an opponent when there is still mare nostrum, so gallia is part of the roman empire? |

Not anymore. I just call it Mare Nostrum because it`s the Roman name. |

Love the idea, ship is well done. Watch out for Carthago Nova's navy. |

Looks nice but the arrangement of the 5" DP guns suggests 10 mountings (5 each side) and not 8 mountings (4 each side). Unless of course, I got it all wrong |
