Post subject:  Battleship Prometheus

I designed a battleship to include some of the better ideas from several battleships into one battleship. The ship does not belong to any nation, yet. The result is the Prometheus. She is armed with 12x14 inch guns in six twin turrets. The secondaries are 14x6 inch casemate guns. The ship is 215,65 meters w/l, and 219,46 meters o/a. She is 32 meters wide, with narrow bow and stern, but wide midship. She is designed for a top speed of 26 knots, but rarely exceeded 24,5 knots. She has an armored belt that is 12,5 inches thick, and 4 inches of deck armor. I will add lifeboats after thinking over what is best; Japanese, British or American lifeboats.

I seriously doubt those aft turrets are going to work, especially if the stern is as narrow as you imply.

It is not as narrow as the American low-angle V hull shape, but more as in narrow for a battleship of that size. The gap between the pairs are for a future tripod mast ala Arkansas.

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
52 887 lbs / 23 989 Kg = 38,5 x 14,0 " / 356 mm shells or 7,3 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1,04
Metacentric height 5,8 ft / 1,8 m
Roll period: 18,2 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 61 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0,79
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1,22

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has raised forecastle, rise forward of midbreak
Block coefficient: 0,650
Length to Beam Ratio: 6,74 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 26,60 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 50 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 20,70 degrees
Stern overhang: -4,00 ft / -1,22 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 33,00 ft / 10,06 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 30,00 ft / 9,14 m (29,50 ft / 8,99 m aft of break)
- Mid (50 %): 27,50 ft / 8,38 m (19,50 ft / 5,94 m aft of break)

- Stern: 20,53 ft / 6,26 m
- Average freeboard: 24,62 ft / 7,50 m

Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 93,4 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 182,0 %
Waterplane Area: 56 903 Square feet or 5 286 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 99 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 201 lbs/sq ft or 982 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0,97
- Longitudinal: 1,32
- Overall: 1,00

Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily

I like the part where is says that the natural speed for the length is 26 kts, when that was my imagined top speed for the ship.

Post subject:  Re: Battleship Prometheus

My only issue with the report would be the armour for the main turrets, all the more since she looks rather Japanese influenced. 18" at the time doesn't feel believable. Maybe 15", but more likely 13-14".

The Nevada class had 18 inch thick gun shields.
