well, the I-mast also has an radar (seawatcher) that was developed to detect periscopes but can find the heads of swimmers in the sea. it also does helicopter guidance. the camera system gatekeeper replaces watchkeepers on the bridge wings and gives a 360 degree surveillance around the ship, both infrared and normal. the ICAS system centers all the antenna's normally found on a ships superstructure into one unit. the seamaster radar does surface and air surveillance and is able to do some fire control.

if you still think you'd best leave the mast of, I would recommend looking at the other damen OPV vessels, having about the same hull shape and propulsion but not build around the functionality of the I-mast 400. (as much as I like that drawing being used :P)

Nice idea. However, I think that in 2015 is too late to start thinking an EU Coast Guard. Concerning EU bureaucracy and slow response to everything, first ships in real world will not deployed until 2018. The EUCG should have been already deployed in Med.

The Migrant crisis also extended on to the Atlantic coast of Africa with the Spanish and Portuguese having Islands in those areas the Portuguese lobbied for and got the EU coastguard area of responsibility increased. To police this area the Coastguard purchased a variant of the spannish BAM patrol vessel. Being fitted for I-mast to improve sensor fits.

I can't help but think that you're all approaching this completely wrong. According to the Italian navy patrolling near the northafrican coast has led to more people taking the trip in ever shittier boats. In fact it's common knowledge that the smugglers rely on the Italian navy to pick them up. Seems to me that the best option would be to step up patrol closer to home and dedicate a couple of landing crafts or ferries or whatever to shipping them back.

Some interesting looking OPVs here.
I'm not the political notions behind the AU stack up, but really who cares when that's the inspiration for some good vessels. Makes a change to see something different too.
