These look promising,Nigel, but I doubt the installation of the 4.5" guns. The Mk. II BD mounting weight was around 38T while the Mk. XIX 4" mounting was only around 16T. That is more than twice, which will add too much top weight and I don't think the hull would suffer that much added weight.

The 4.5" I have used is the Mk.III UD mount at just under 30 tons, which times 3 = 90, while the 4 x 4" twin mounts are about 64 tons so it is still an excess of 26 tons or so. Not a huge amount over a 4000 ton cruiser, but as you say it is all relative.

Reducing it to 6x4.5" guns from 8x4" I was hoping to keep the firepower equivalent without adding too much to the topweight, serves me right for not looking at the weight tables first. It just seems wrong to me to arm a cruiser with 6x4". 6x4.5" I could just about swallow (about par with the J-M class DD's) but 6x4" puts them down around the Hunt class escorts. A bitter pill for any cruiser captain.

Actually some Real Life 'C' class conversions were armed with 6 4" guns like HMS Colombo

Yes thanks Novice, I knew that one of Colombo was there, I have used parts off it for some of the C & D units I have created, mainly the lifeboat stacks, Pepperpot radar, and the short mainmast arrangement.

I am still unhappy with it even as a real life unit. Imagine a new commander being drafted aboard Colombo in 1943, "You are going to a C class cruiser old man." "Oh good, which one?" "Colombo, just out of refit with six four inch" Dead quiet settles on the room... "It's got some nice new 40mm to play with." "When did it become an MTB?"

Even Colombo above could have had the 4th twin 4" aft by reducing the aft superstructure and moving it forward toward the pepperpot a few feet. Delete the five twin 20's in favour of another single/twin 40mm Hazemeyer mount. (But that's just me)..

By 1943, even in my weirdest moments, I would not be putting 'C's through an AA refit. I would keep the ones I had already done up to date, but the 450 odd crew aboard one with 6" would be more useful being drafted aboard a Colony or Dido while the remains become a Mulberry unit.

what might be the reason that the above was not done (just thinking out loud) is that it adds to the crew requirement, while certainly not adding to the crew space.

Something to think about Ace,

Well if the 5 twin 20's had a minimum of 10 crew to operate (gunner/loader x 5) plus a set of 3-5 extras taking away used mags and bringing new ones. I figured 4 crew for the Hazemeyer mount plus crew for the ammo handling arrangements. The 4" all up is normally 6-7 crew depending on the distance from the 4" handling space to the mounting. Doing the changes I have shown would save 2-3 crew, or at least be even.

Again, I'm late to the party, but Krakatoa said "I have not been able to find anything that tells me what the design of those Turkish scouts was going to be"
There are brief details and a line drawing in Warship 2001-2002 p156, 'Armstrong Portfolio No4' by Peter Brook.
A cross between a C and the much earlier Gems in appearance. Low forecastle and low poop, looking flush-decked. Three raked funnels, 3550tons, 24,000shp, 3 sets Parsons turbines, 27 knots, 2x6in 6 x 4in (3 each side). Mixed firing with 700tons coal, 250tons oil. Described as a 'protected scout' with 1.5in armoured deck with 2.5in slopes. Ordered May 1914, material collected, not laid down.

No problem Smurf.

I was pretty sure that the material gathered that went into the "Turkish" C's was just that, material only, while the design was in line with the C class timeline.
