What about replacing the tripod masts in the first two units with smaller and more modern bridge structures like it was done on the italian Cesare/Cavour classes? Plate the casemates and fit a new DP secondary armament.

As for the other two that got minor refits: remove the first one or two casemate guns, upgrade a bit the AA guns and cut down slightly bit the two tripod masts.

What do you think?

Sounds reasonable. But I don`t really know which style to rebuilt the two ships in. Should I continue to mix the styles of several navies with a touch of my own personal style? I also think I should trunk the two funnels, make a large funnel somewhere in between the two. It might not be possible, as the two funnels are spaced some distance from each other. Also, I don`t think there existed DP guns in the early 30s, not in real life at least.

The japanese 127/50 3rd Year Type that equipped the Fubuki class Destroyer is considered one of the first DP guns. The gun was designed in 1926 and entered service in 1928.

Starting with the Ayanami subclass (Shikinami commissioned in 1929, another 4 ships following in 1930, 4 in 1931 and 1 in 1932) the gun model B had a maximum elevation of 75° making it a true DP mount in all aspects. (Yes, a bit outdated by the time WWII broke out, but in 1928/1930 this was one of the most modern guns around.)
