well, that depends. what kind of navy do you want? how many ships, and how big?

the dutch have the LCF, of which the C is for command..... it may not have the power to command an carrier battle group, but it is more then capable enough to do NAVO duty's. the radars are actaully more powerful then AEGIS in some aspects.

Okay, I have a new project. I feel that a propper command ship is needed to lead my fleets, aside from a carrier, since carriers may not always be available when you need them to command a fleet, or simply unnescesary due to their maintenance costs and the cost of deploying one in the first place.

What I propose is a guided missile cruiser fitted with perhaps AEGIS equiped, unless there is a better system for mass information gathering, targeting, guidence, etc. The reason I shose the GC classification is that it gives me enough space to fit all of the computer systems, propulsion, weapon systems and provisions for deployment.

Is this reasonable? Keep in mind that like all of my ships, this is for RP use on NS, although I do not by any means intend to go overboard as some NS'ers might.
From what you've said, you want a full right and proper missile cruiser in the vein of the Albany class or the CGBL model, and not an overgrown DLG/DDG. Displacement wise you are going to start at around 12k tons and go up from there to fit both the AEGIS system, proper fleet command facilities, enough weapons to take advantage of AEGIS, and enough range to make it worth building.

Perhaps a nuclear powered vessel? It would become a large vessel, have nearly limitless range, have more then enough power to run whatver systems it would have onboard. As for defence, it would be the center of the fleet, which is about the same size as a US carrier group.

Ace, you said radar would be more powerful, could you be more specific? This sounds interesting.

SPY-1 range, 750km IIRC.
SMART-L range (only for ABM role, due to the radar horizon) 2000km and possibly upgrade.
20 years of radar technology have come an long way :P

that said, AEGIS has most likely more guidance channels than APAR+ SMART-L, and the long range radar is rotating. that might give aegis the upper hand in the command role when working with larger fleets, but this is unconfirmed, as details of both systems are classified information, of course.

Well, here she is so far. Nowhere near finished, just thought I'd ask for some critiques...

If you are going for low radar signature, you will want to ditch the barbettes under your main guns.

uhm....
- that is one long and low hull for an ship like this.
- the field of vision for the aft SPY-1 arrays is gonna be really bad
- what year should this ship be build? it has an mix of systems from 1980 to 2000+
- the aster missiles don't work with aegis
- the guns are...... well I have no idea what they are. I have never seen anything like them on real proposals...... I know they are on the parts sheets, but that is about it
- single prop design on an ship this size. NOOOOOOO!
- your draft seems really low
- I miss an sonar
- that is one unconventional place to put the anchor.... any special reason?
- the CIWS positions aren't gona work. unlike phalanx, this system has deck penetration, so on top of the RHIB is no good idea. the one on the stern will get wet, and the one on the hangar.... well you might be able to put the hangar or the CIWS to the side, so that might be possible. on the bridge..... possible, but takes a lot of space where you want to have space, especially in an command ship.

I have to say, that this ship seems more of an long low destroyer then an full cruiser. this is more of my opinion though, as she has more or less the size... and the weapons.... well.....

It's the stealth version of the Bofors 57mm Mk 3 as used on the Visby class.

no, those look like this. http://www.shipbucket.com/Real%20Design ... BY%201.gif
these seem to have a lot in common with the oto melara 127 old drawing.
