The number includes the Surgeon, Schoolmaster, Bursar, Quartermaster, Midshipmen and Warrants. Since I don't have anything more powerful than a 6th rate ship (according to the Royal Navy) I have a contingent of Marines on every vessel. It does seem top heavy, but I guess Commodore Edwin W. Moore had his own way of doing things.

When the Army was re-established in 1845, it re-activated a Dragoon Regiment. Dragoons are, essentially, mounted infantry. The Regiment was composed of 10 companies of 72 men each. Its first weapons were Ames Company Sabers and Hall 1836 model carbines bought surplus from the United States:



The Hall was one of the first mass-produced breech-loaded firearms. It was faster to load than a muzzle-loader, considered handy when fighting Indians who could get off four or five arrows in the same amount of time. It was also easy to reload on horseback. But, like most breech-loaders of the time, it had gas leaks between the chamber and the barrel. Also, if the lock was not completely closed the mechanism could burst in the shooter's face. The Army saw more advantages than disadvantages and equipped the regiment with 673 carbines.

Halfway through the Mexican War, the Army issued a third weapon to the Dragoon Regiment, a pair of Colt Walker Model pistols for every soldier and officer:



More robust than the Paterson model, it was a monster that weighed 4.5 pounds and carried six shots instead of five. 1500 were ordered and delivered to the Army, with 1414 going to the Dragoons.

In 1849 the Dragoon Regiment gained two more companies for a total of 12. Even with that expansion, it was not enough to man all the forts on the Texas frontier. Two more companies were added in 1851 for a total of 14. At one point, there were a total of 16 garrisons from El Paso to Brownsville and up to the Trinity River.

In 1852 the Dragoon Regiment was reorganized with 9 companies and redesignated the 1st Cavalry Regiment. The other 5 companies were organized with 4 new ones into the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

The expansion came with replacement for the worn-out Hall Carbines. Sharps Model 1853 carbines, another breech-loader, were selected for Texas.



They were safer and more reliable than the Halls, even though they still had some problems with gas leakage. Texas models were built rugged and simple, without the tape primer or pellet primer systems on versions used in the US Army.
