As far as the Group 3 (and possibly the group 2) destroyers go, room can probably be found by moving the Phalanx aft to the NSSM launcher position, and sticking the mast for the 3D radar immediately aft of the stack. This will provide better fields of fire for the Phalanx, provide a fairly decent lo...

The errant Snark was aimed at Ascension Island, but landed in Brazil. I think the problem was something besides not being able to see the stars. According to a source I found on the web (an always accurate and relivant source) above 45,000 feet cloud cover should not interfer with astronavigation s...

The grate is part of the helicopter winch down system. Lets them operate in higher sea states than if they tried to land normally.

It might not be quite as large of an aircraft as you were thinking, but VARIOUS might be a good concept for the UCAV. Rolling takeoff alone would probably be able to provide an increase in lift without requiring a catapult, and the concept includes fairly lowly loaded fans.

I thought the VLS Harpoon launch was simply something that would be done if someone paid for the work to be done, not something that had actually been tested. I think the ship does look cleaner without the Harpoons, and really, no OTH Harpoon shot has ever been done, in which case you're better off ...
